Former James Bond George Lazenby will share the secrets of “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” following a screening of the 1969 film at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, Calif., on September 8. The film is being screened as part of a short Bond series co-presented with the British Academy of Film and Television.

With the Bond franchise in limbo due to a likely bankruptcy at MGM, this will be one of the few opportunities to see Bond on the big screen in for a while (at least until the next Bond revival).

http://blogs.indiewire.com/iwnow/arc...n_santa_monica

Wednesday, September 8 – 7:30 PM

Co-Presented with the British Academy of Film and Television Arts/Los Angeles

ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE, 1969, MGM/UA, 140 min. Dir. Peter Hunt. Former male model George Lazenby plays Ian Fleming’s superspy in one of the most satisfying (and underrated) of the 1960s Bonds. Lovely Diana Rigg proves more than Bond’s match as the two team up to topple scar-faced Ernst Blofeld (Telly Savalas) who is conducting suspect "allergy research" on beautiful women from around the world. Scripted by 007 veteran Richard Maibaum. Discussion following with actor George Lazenby.
Singer Sir Paul McCartney has apparently revealed that he was not the expected singer of the James Bond theme 'Live And Let Die' but Dame Shirley Bassey.

He said that after he'd recorded the much-loved theme, producer Harry Saltzman expected Dame Shirley Bassey or someone else to sing it.

Sir Paul told MOJO magazine that he'd always wanted to write a Bond theme.

According to Macca, when Saltzman heard the track, he asked producer George Martin-who he planned on having sing the "finished" version-for his opinion.

"He said, 'That's a great demo but who are you thinking of getting to sing it?' He was thinking of Shirley Bassey," said Paul.

James Bond star Daniel Craig became the two millionth supporter of England's bid to hold the 2018 World Cup.

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ukp...MHz3Tqr3v43RNQ

The "Back the Bid" campaign, which was launched by former England captains David Beckham and Gary Lineker at Wembley last year, has seen a plethora of stars lend their support to bring the competition back to the UK for the first time since 1966.

McLaren duo Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton were two of the first celebrities to register their support and were quickly followed by the likes of funnyman James Corden, musicians Sting, Noel Gallagher and Robbie Williams and entertainers Ant and Dec.

Football fans from more than 100 countries have also registered their support over the past 15 months.

England most unusual bid backer was revealed last week as Weymouth-born Paul the Octopus, the international star of the South Africa 2010 World Cup, became an official ambassador.

The passing of the two million mark was reached almost 100 days ahead of schedule and the milestone represents a significant landmark for the Bid.

Supermarket chain Morrisons has secured more than one and a half million signatures thanks to a campaign led by former England captain Alan Shearer while BT has created a virtual England 2018 flag with photos and signatures of thousands of fans.

The World Cup Bid was officially launched in May last year with support from all three major political parties.

England is one of five competitors bidding to host the 2018 tournament and one of eight bidding to host the 2022 tournament. The decision for both tournaments will be announced in Zurich in December.

TIMOTHY Dalton, the former James Bond actor, is set to star in the television spy show Chuck.

http://www.rte.ie/ten/2010/0827/daltont.html

Dalton, 64, will play the role of a mysterious visitor who has an unexplained past with the mother of co-star Zachary Levi's character, Hollywood site Deadline reports.

The British actor was married to musician Oksana Grigorieva in the 1990s and had one child with her before the couple split.

The Russian pianist is best known today for her subsequent relationship with movie icon Mel Gibson - and the bitter court battle that arose from their acrimonious break-up.

The fourth season of the NBC espionage comedy drama premieres on September 20, Deadline said.

Dalton is best known for playing British spy James Bond in the 1980s films The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill.

Landing Dalton is a major coup for Schwartz and fellow EP Chris Fedak. The actor—who allegedly turned down an offer to join the third season of Sons of Anarchy—hasn’t appeared on an American series in more than three decades (since a 1979 stint on Charlie’s Angels). How’d they manage to lure him back?

“With my charm and Fedak’s singing voice,” deadpans Schwartz. “That’s not true. We’re huge fans of Mr. Dalton, not only for being a badass Bond but for his comic work in Hot Fuzz and The Rocketeer.

“In truth,” Schwartz continues, “we’ve wanted to have him on the show since season 1. When we came up with this part, we thought he’d be perfect. So we sent him [some episodes], he dug it, and then we started talking.”

Dalton makes his first appearance in Chuck‘s seventh episode, titled “Chuck Versus the First Fight.”

Chuck‘s fourth season kicks off Monday, Sept. 20.

A screenwriter who helped found the James Bond film dynasty was suspected of being a Soviet spy, it has emerged.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/ar...oviet-spy.html

Wolf Mankowitz who introduced producers Harry Saltzman and Albert Broccoli to each other, helped write their first film Dr No, as well as a spoof version of Casino Royale.

But at Cambridge University, once a breeding ground for communist spies, he had joined the university communist society, provoking the suspicion of MI5.

The security service ran a file on him for 14 years, which has been released to the National Archives, and photographed him as he visited the Soviet Consulate on four separate occasions.

Born in Bethnal Green in 1924, Mankowitz was the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants, who had improved on his East-end schooling by reading the second-hand books in which his father dealt, winning an exhibition in English literature to Downing College, Cambridge.

After leaving he began selling antiques and built up a renowned collection of Wedgwood pottery.

MI5’s first report from June 1944 related to his wife, Ann Seligman, who was on a list discovered by agents and thought to be the proposed branch committee of Cambridge University communist society.

In September 1948, the Central Office of Information asked for information on Mankowitz after he applied for a temping job and was told he was “the husband of a communist party member and himself a convinced Marxist.” He was turned down for the job.

Sir Percy Sillitoe, the director general of MI5, circulated a letter asking for information from chief constables in April 1949 but nothing new emerged.

A memo from the BBC to MI5 in November said he was a contributor to programmes from time to time and described himself as a freelance writer and lecturer, who had written for magazines including the Spectator.

MI5 replied that he would be a security risk if he was given access to classified information – which seemed unlikely since he was working on a translation of a Chekhov play.

A press cutting from October 1956 said he wanted to set up a British-Soviet co-film production which might explain observation logs from MI5 officers watching the Soviet Consulate which recorded him arriving by taxi four times between October 1955 and December 1956.

On one occasion the report noted: “Fawn duffle coat, dark hair” on another “blue zip jacket, grey trousers.”

A report from December 1956 from “an established and usually reliable source” was stamped in red “use with caution” and said Mankowitz was an active member of the British Soviet Friendship Society.

MI5 at least discovered he had a shared interest with James Bond in sex. During an interview with the society’s magazine from February 1957, soon after a trip to the USSR, he commented on the treatment of sex in Soviet novels, saying: “The Russians underestimate the importance of sex as grossly as the Americans exaggerate it. They treat it as if it didn’t exist. No-one will admit to having problems in their sex life. I found it almost impossible to get anybody to discuss seriously the Soviet attitude towards sex, though somebody did eventually admit to me that there was quite a lot of adultery.”

Mankowitz hosted a Friday night chat show on ITV and in March 1958 his guest Ludovic Kennedy finally confronted him with allegations he was a communist.

“I’m not a communist. I’m an anarchist,” he replied.

He was in any case, ill-suited for spying - his commanding officer during his National Service observed: “A highly strung individual of nervous temperament. Even if he harnesses communist views, I do not think he has the personality of strength of character to force them on to his fellow soldiers.”

ITV has struck a deal to keep hold of the free-to-air rights for the James Bond franchise, including the rights to air the complete back catalogue of more than 20 films in high definition for the first time.

The broadcaster, which has had a longstanding relationship with MGM Worldwide Television for the free-to-air UK rights for the Bond films, has signed a multi-year renewal agreement that includes the premiere of Daniel Craig's Quantum of Solace on terrestrial TV.

As part of the renewal agreement, the broadcaster reckons it will show all the Bond films in HD for the first time in a season on ITV1 spanning 2010 and 2011. ITV1 HD launched this year.

"James Bond is a British cinematic icon loved by ITV's audience and we're delighted to continue the franchise's long association with ITV, as well as the chance, for the first time, to show every Bond feature film in fantastic HD," said Zai Bennett, ITV's director of digital channels and acquisitions.

James Bond may be in hock, but that doesn’t mean screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade aren’t doing their usual globetrotting.

The “Quantum of Solace” and “Casino Royale” co-writers have been hired by Parkes MacDonald/Imagenation to pen an original action thriller based on a concept from Michael Lieber and Walter Parkes. Parkes, Lieber and Laurie MacDonald are producing the project.
