The title of the 23rd James Bond film has been confirmed as Skyfall.

The latest 007 adventure will star Daniel Craig for the third time. Leading ladies have been confirmed as French actress Berenice Marlohe and Naomie Harris.

Skyfall is being directed by Sam Mendes, who won an Oscar for 1999's American Beauty.

Mendes said the storyline will take the secret agent to London, China, Turkey and Scotland.

The movie, which sees the return of Dame Judi Dench as M, will also star Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney and Javier Bardem - as the villain of the piece.

It will be released in the UK on 26 October 2012.

Much speculation about the new film has focused on what Mendes will bring to the franchise, with some suggesting he will tone down - or even abandon altogether - the action sequences.

But the director denied that this was the case. He told reporters in London that the "fantastic script" had "all the elements of a classic Bond movie, including - to quell any rumours - lots of action".

When asked what fans could expect from the latest film, he added: "The movie will reveal everything, and there's lots of surprises."

Producer Barbara Broccoli said no one had yet been chosen to write and perfom the Bond theme tune.

Financial troubles

Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the first Bond movie, 1962's Dr No.

James Bond is one of the longest-running franchises in film history, but Bond 23 will mark the end of a four year gap.

The last 007 outing was in 2008's Quantum of Solace, directed by Marc Forster.

Work on the 23rd film was suspended in April 2010 because of uncertainty over the company's future.

The franchise had been on hold amid financial troubles, with MGM filing for bankruptcy protection last November.

A rescue deal and restructuring plan put US firm Spyglass Entertainment at the helm of MGM, which had struggled due to several box office flops and a DVD sales slump.

Producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli and MGM have said production for the next Bond will begin in late 2011.

Craig - who made his Bond debut in Casino Royale in 2006 - is the sixth actor to play the British secret agent in the official Bond series.

Sir Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Sir Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan preceded him in the iconic role.

Casino Royale, was the most successful instalment in the franchise's 49-year history, making $594m (£385m) worldwide.

Bond Is Back: Name Of New 007 Film Revealed
The next James Bond film will be called Skyfall, it has been confirmed by the film's producers.
The announcement was made at a launch in London attended by the main cast, including 007 himself, Daniel Craig.

Producer Michael G. Wilson described the title of the film as being the "the worst kept secret in London".

Skyfall will be the third film to star Craig as the secret agent and filming on it begins today.

British director, Sam Mendes, confirmed that Dame Judi Dench will resume her role as M while Javier Bardem will take on the role of Villain.

Ralph Fiennes will also be part of the cast.

Mendes said he took on the 23rd Bond film because he wanted a "huge challenge".

He said they would be shooting much of the film in Whitehall, close to where the announcement was made.

They will also be filming in Istanbul and Shanghai.

The future of the Bond franchise looked uncertain when studio MGM filed for bankruptcy in 2010.

I'm pleased with the catchy title, Skyfall

I'm disappointed that there's been no word on Moneypenny, though apparently some character names have been kept secret, so I'm really hoping at least Moneypenny is one of them

Pleased that Dennis Gassner is back

I'm a bit concerned about the plot teaser. They've been dragging Dench's M into the Bond films a lot, which is ok, but I prefer the more traditional supporting role performed by Lee. I was hoping for a more conventional Bond film, but doesn't sound like it's going to be, for better or for worse. I wonder if that was Peter Morgan's "shocking" plot element...

Pleased that they'll be filming in China- it's long overdue!

One thing about the many rumors for this one held true for the most part.
The Bardem, Fiennes,and other casting rumors for the most part were spot on.as well as some of the locations, Even Wilson himself said today the worst kept secret in London was the films title........

We've got some for speculation and rumours now that they've whetted our appetites.

My predictions, based on what we've heard. Could well be completely wrong, but we'll see...

London- will have the most prominent role during the Craig films, and potentially a similar amount of screen time for the city, if not more so, than TWINE seeing as Whitehall, "attack on MI6", not to mention usual time in London and the reported action sequence in Smithfield Market. I wonder if we'll return to the actual MI6 building this time, and I hope we don't get Gassner's silly sci-fi set for the MI6 office again

Scotland- Seeing as Craig has mentioned the "geographical" importance of Skyfall, I'm wondering if there's a connection between M and Scotland, with the location having some tie with the name Skyfall...

Style- it sounds like, in some respects, this will be the most traditional Bond of Craig's films so far, though will still follow the trends set by his earlier entries. I anticipate a relatively complex plot (compared to the likes of Goldfinger & Thunderball) which has dark elements, though I think they'll potentially make this the lightest of the three, or at least as light as CR. I think they'll cautiously bring back some traditional gadgets, but not many.

Bardem- I think he will be a more conventional villain, and when he questioned if the villain will necessarily be a "bad person", I wonder if, instead of being the villain from the outset, like Scaramanga, he might be a villain who is revealed a bit further into the film, e.g. Kristatos.

Three secret characters- I have a feeling that Finney will replace Dench as M due to the scandal revealed in the film, perhaps just for part of the film or maybe from Skyfall onward. Fiennes is a puzzling case- I think he'll either be Q/ Major Boothroyd or Blofeld. The latter element is particularly thought-provoking as, on the one hand, he has a reputation for long-term leading villains i.e. Voldemort, so Blofeld is in a similar vein, plus he's bald and scary. On the other hand, the emphasized absence of Quantum makes it unlikely they'd just return Blofeld as a one-off villain... Will be exciting to see MI6 have to battle on home turf in London. And like you I think Fiennes will be Blofeld also he looks like a Blofeld .
