No respect...
If there's one thing I hate more than John Cleese, it's how EON got rid of Desmond in DAD. No tribute, no dedication, no explanation to his character's absence, there wasn't even "To Desmond Llewelyn" at the begining of the film, shameful. No one has remained in the series longer than Desmond and the creators should show some respect. The creator musta thought, "Why try to mend when it's easier to find a replacement" and thus immediatly gave the completely wrong for the part Cleese Desmond's role and seeming denied Desmond's existance. Actually now that I think of it, I didn't see any tribute to Bernard Lee in Octopussy, nor was there any tribute to Ian Fleming in Goldfinger. And seeing as they didn't show Desmond any respect in DAD, I doubt they'll show any tribute to Robert Brown (Who died last year) in Bond 21. What happens when Sean Connery passes? Is EON just gonna leave him for dead too?

It would be nice if they did. But if they did that for every Bond film, there would be countless tributes, and it would ruin the meaning of it. At the end of TND there was a tribute to Cubby Broccoli: "In Loving Memory of Albert "Cubby" Brocolli" [I think that's right].

Yes, but Desmond Llewelyn has been in now what, all but 2 films? They could've at least said something during the closing credits.

Tribute
I also agree that Desmond deserved mention in the credits. They did have Cleese recite his most famous line though, maybe they thought that was enough. I kind of like Cleese as the new quartermaster. I just hope that they go back to the classic Bond formula and get away from the cheesy CG effects. That iceberg scene was painful. With Pierce's tenure coming to a close, they really need to write a classic Bond story so that he can paint his masterpiece.

As far as i'm concerned, nobody will live up to Desmond. I didn't even like Cleese in TWINE. I'd like to see Cleese play his own Q, and not try to be someone he's not.The same can be said for the Bonds.

Yeah, I agree. I felt the same way when Bernard Lee passed away. I thought Robert Brown's M was passable at best. And when I found that Judi Dench was going to be M, I was very skeptical. But she's turned out to be quite good. I didn't think Cleese was very good in TWINE, but he didn't play the baffoon in DAD, so maybe he'll grow into it.

Granted, though, Robert Brown's films as M by and large didn't give him a lot of room to be much more than an expositional character (ie there only to move the story along). In Licence to Kill, I thought he did some great work.

Robert Brown was better than Dench is.

Judi Dench is the best thing to happen to the Bond films since Sean Connery. Her M is a really great, subtly multifaceted character. She has really great dynamics with Pierce Brosnan in particular but also Samantha Bond, Colin Salmon and Michael Kitchen. I'm still working on my opinion essay about her character, which will expand a great deal on what I'm saying, but the Brosnan films wouldn't be anywhere near as good without her.
Besides, she's Judi Dench, she isn't physically capable of being anything less than excellent.

Q and the Future
Boy, you really don't like John Cleese. I actually thought it would be pretty cool if, during the next film, he gave Bond his arms while doing the classic "silly-walk". Just kidding. It will be interesting, though, to see what EON does relative to the MI6 cast once Brosnan retires. He is on record as saying that he'll do one more, but I think he'll actually do another one after that. Samantha Fox has said that he's not interested in playing Moneypenny if Brosnan is not involved. So what do they do? Do you recast the entire MI6 crew when you cast the 6th James Bond? M, Tanner, and Charles are excellent and the new Q has just been introduced. Moneypenny is also excellent, although she is starting to look a little older which causes a bit of a dilemma from a sexual tension standpoint. Do you just recast Bond and have him become younger as Moneypenny gets older? Or is the casting of Moneypenny tied to the casting of Bond, ie The Living Daylights? I only mention it because if Brosnan only does one more, then imminent change is upon us.

Well, Draco, on the note of Moneypenny, Lois Maxwell played the role from Dr. No through A View to a Kill, so just because Moneypenny is aging doesn't mean that they can't keep her around. Sure, Lois probably should've left the role a bit earlier, but what's happened has happened.

Maxwell sure was better than the next two Moneypenny's.
