Contributions: On September 5, 1939 in New South Wales, Australia, George Lazenby was born. Lazenby's one time run as James Bond in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" remains a classic to Bond fans around the world. Interestingly, no other actor has fought as hard to get the part of James Bond as Lazenby did. Starting with his unplanned meeting of producer Albert R. Broccoli, Lazenby was noticed right away for his Bond-looking face. Lazenby purchased an Aston Martin DB5, a Rolex, and a suit tailor-made for Sean Connery, just so he could try to feel around the character. His dedication ultimately paid off. The producers have said that they hired Lazenby because he had the best screen-test fight, the best interviews, and the best audition. However, after being the most difficult actor Broccoli had ever worked with, Lazenby lost his good name in Hollywood, and faded into the darkness after his one time romp as the great spy hero.

It is unfortunate that Lazenby quit the role of James Bond before "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" premiered because Broccoli claims that he would have made the best Bond actor had he gone on to make more than one movie. Lazenby claims that he quit for a number of reasons. One of the bigger reasons was because he felt that the character would become lost in a hippie dominated society, so he ignored his seven-picture deal he was offered. Another reason was because he felt that he needed to spend more time with his family. What ever kept Lazenby away from the martini is a huge burden in the eyes of the average Bond fan. "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" is the favorite of thousands of fans, and Lazenby has worked his way onto the top of the favorite Bond list for many more fans. George Lazenby had one of the hardest jobs handed to him, replacing Sean Connery, who had created the role, and turning it into something else. There was a lot of pressure on him to make the character accepted by other fans and still come off as believable. He success as James Bond is evident in his memorable performance of 007..
