Shocking news!

Well, not THAT shocking.

It seems Daniel Craig, the James Bond franchise's poster child, has declined previous reports stating that the actor will reprise his role as secret agent James Bond, 007 O.H.M.S.S. for four more films.

Did contract talks dissolve? Is Craig holding out for more money?

Daniel Craig as James Bond

Check out this tidbit from a HisDarkMaterials.com article where Craig, talking about his latest film, The Golden Compass, does an about-face when inquired about his Bond tenure:

Q: You've been signed for four more Bond films?
Daniel Craig: That's what you said... I never said that. [laughter]

Q: You said that you thought about the first one eighteen months ago, before you finally said 'I'm making this film', so I thought this was quite a commitment to make?
Daniel Craig: Well, that's what's been said, it's not that it's not true, because I haven't signed up. What I've done is I've signed up on the next movie, after that we'll see. That's the way I'm doing it, and certainly it's not four more- that's the truth. It's certainly not four more.

Well, crap.

Although Bond fans shouldn't be worried about this just yet. More than likely, Craig will test the waters with his performance in Bond 22. That is, if Bond 22 exceeds the box office take of its predecessor, (which, in my opinion, it will) Craig will be in a perfect position to bargain his contract any way he wants - larger incentives for the next film, a longer commitment, etc.

I believe this to be as a result of contract negotiations. And really, Craig and his agent have it right - business is business, and if Craig's second outing as Bond improves in the slightest for the next movie, he has a right to hold out - he will have deserved any reward that comes to him.

I guess the previous reports were just rumor...?

Regardless, there may be a glimmer of good news from this report. Perhaps this 180 from Craig means that he has a lot of faith in Bond 22's success - and something special is in store.
