Mathieu Amalric is Bond 22 Villain
Posted on December 5, 2007 4:30 PM
Confirmed!
Bond 22 now has a villain! Mathieu Amalric, the French actor that was linked to the 007 franchise for the past few weeks, has now been confirmed as the filmmakers' choice for the role of the as-yet-to-be-named villain in Bond 22. Previously, Amalric would neither confirm nor deny reports that he was cast as the villain.

An article over at Empire Online has confirmed the scoop:
Amalric would not be drawn on details of the character, but said that, yes, he will play the bad guy in the 22nd Bond movie. "I will, it's true. I play the villain, yes. James Bond," Amalric said. "It has to do with childhood, you know? To be a villain in James Bond is just so funny. I never dreamt about that. It's not what I want to do with my career. It's just that I have kids and it's so funny to do that. But it doesn't mean that I'm not going to do a very small French film for free with my friends."
He seems perfect Bond villain casting to us, possessing foreignness, a slightly crazed look in his eye and a lot of acting talent (watch The Diving Bell and The Butterfly to see for yourself). Eva Green has dropped hints in the past that the villain of the next film would be her boyfriend referenced in Casino Royale. Could that be who Amalric will be playing? And are we going to be getting peeks at Bond's childhood?
With the villain rumours now at an end, we can move on to guessing at the Bond girl. We're saying Bella Emberg or that nice Kate Garraway from GMTV, just to mix things up.

Hooray For The (Relative) Unknown!
Excellent news! Why?
Because, like most 'hits' when it comes to casting a part in a James Bond movie, casting a relative unknown for any part lends itself to better character quality than that of a more famous actor or actress (come on - Eva Green's Vesper Lynd versus Halle Berry's Jinx? it's a no brainer!)
Cast Him Yourself
Also exciting because I have no idea how the guy will perform, so it will be interesting to see how he acts in a movie I have not seen before and gauge his role from the perspective of a Bond villain. Go ahead, you know you want to watch one of his foreign films and see if he can cut it. I know I watched Layer Cake several times when Daniel Craig was cast as 007 (and after watching that movie, I gave him my approval).
Un Villain Francais
Last time the franchise has seen a Frenchmen play the villain role was (correct me if I am wrong) Michael Lonsdale, when he played the role of Hugo Drax in 1979's Moonraker. And all other feelings aside for the film, Lonsdale's cold-hearted character was definitely a highlight.
Let's hope that Amalric will revive some of the same characteristics as Hugo Drax into the role - and, as stated in the article, perhaps as Vesper's past boyfriend? If so, I cannot wait to see the first face-to-face between him and Bond. What will they sat to each other? Will they reminisce about Vesper?
Exciting news!!!
