Coincidences were everywhere. The Anna Kournikova Sports Illustrated article the woman sitting next to me on the flight toyed with the title of the 1963 Bond movie From Russia With Love. The article was titled From Russia With Smarts.

Was I at LAX, or Stromberg's Atlantis headquarters from The Spy Who Loved Me?

The Aston Martin V12 Vanquish that was parked in front of the hotel, however, took the cake for funny Bond coincidences that occured on my trip to Electronic Arts Headquarters in Los Angeles, CA.

Along with webmasters of other gaming and James Bond websites, Message Board member Perminisconious and I had the pleasure of visiting EA for the exclusive GoldenEye Rogue Agent Community Day from July 22 to July 23. We toured the studios, interviewed game producers, played the game itself and did so much more.

We were even told game news that hasn't even been released to the press yet! What was the breaking news? Christopher Lee, famous for his role as Francisco Scaramanga from The Man With The Golden Gun, has just signed on to voice over his character in the game.

A summary of the game's premise, by EA Games:

Why save the world when you can rule it? Going where no previous James Bond game has dared to tread, GoldenEye: Rogue Agent breaks all the rules. Cross over to the dark side of the Bond universe to experience life as a high-rolling, cold-hearted villain.

As an aspiring 00 agent dismissed from MI6 for reckless brutality, you're recruited by Auric Goldfinger in a ruthless war against Dr. No for control of the Bond underworld. A brutal encounter with Dr. No costs you an eye, but Goldfinger's technicians replace it with a gold-hued, synthetic eye, earning you the name 'GoldenEye'. With the ability to customize and upgrade your villain persona, wreak havoc as you make your unrelenting rise through the ranks.

On globe-spanning missions of vengeance and demolition, cross paths with such infamous allies and enemies as Oddjob, Scaramanga, Xenia Onatopp, and of course, Pussy Galore.

Villains rule in GoldenEye: Rogue Agent.

Here are some tidbits on the game that we found fairly interesting during the course of the event that may not have been known to you:

Tidbits about GoldenEye: Rogue Agent:

- It will be released for Nintendo Gamecube, Microsoft Xbox, and Sony Playstation 2 in the Fall of 2004 (most likely November).
- Expected ESRB rating will be a 'high' teen, but no blood will be in the game.
- The game will support THX and 5.1 surround sound.
- Progressive scan and high definition will be supported on systems with the appropriate capabilities.
- System linking will be supported on PS2 and Xbox.
-The voice cast will include Dame Judi Dench as M and Christopher Lee as Francisco Scaramanga. Soundalikes for Pussy Galore, Xenia Onatopp, Auric Goldfinger, and Dr. Julius No will also be included in the game.

- It will be about 8-12 stages with about 20 levels, with some stages taking as long as an hour (with multiple save points).
- Online play will be supported on Xbox and PS2 for up to 8 players, including a beginning to end co op mode, death matches, and other multiplayer modes. (More info coming...)
- GERA will implement the 'E.V.I.L. A.I.,' which conforms to your playing strategy, and reacts more like real-life players. Enemies will take cover based on sightlines and will react differently each time you play the game. Enemies are also likely to act differently depending on what weapons you are carrying, and they will react to how you attack other enemies.
- There will be multiple controller setups available, including single and dual control stick movement systems.
- Multiple difficulty settings will be supported.
- Character movement includes ducking, but not jumping.
- The game is purely a first person shooter, so no driving levels or rail shooting levels like in Agent Under Fire and Nightfire.
- Health will regenerate over time, but armor will not, unless you pick up new armor.
- 12-14 weapons will be available in the game, including grenades, pistols, assault rifles, machine guns, shotguns, and rocket launchers.
- Mines will not be in the game, but there will be similar devices that will act similar to mines, with some sort of remote implementation.
- Double weapons will be supported, including mixing and matching of one-handed weapons. Each hand is mapped to a separate trigger button, allowing independent firing. Each weapon can be reloaded independently, as well. There will still only be one crosshair, instead of being able to aim both guns at different targets.
- The number of weapons will be limited to how many you can hold in your hands. You will always have a gold pistol at your disposal, but you can not put any weapons off to the side to use later.
- Guns will have a degree of inaccuracy, such as a spread for automatic weapons.
- The game will be designed somewhat as a Bond movie, including a 'pre-title' level, and a theme song (artist TBA).
- The 'golden eye' you are given from Goldfinger will give you a variety of electromagnetic tools, such as a temporary shield and the ability to throw enemies from a distance.
- The fist fighting system includes punching, grabbing hostages to use as human shields, and melee attacks with guns (such as hitting someone with the butt of your pistol). The fist fighting/melee system was also designed to be more effective than previous first person shooters (essentially a 2 punch system).
- Indicators will show what direction you are being attacked from.
- Some levels will have destructible landscape, but all other object interaction will be limited to switches and machinery. Many switches will also activate 'death traps,' which are tricks where you can 'evilly' dispose of your enemies, such as running them over with pallets of gold in Fort Knox.

EXCLUSIVE EA DAY SCREENSHOT:
(Hong Kong Level)

- It has not been determined if James Bond will be in the multiplayer mode, but a 'wide variety' of Bond villains will be playable in the multiplayer mode, including Goldfinger, Oddjob, Dr. No and more.
- There will be no ability for multiplayer bots, but there will be a 'scrimmage mode,' where you can play against the E.V.I.L. A.I. in multiplayer levels.
- All weapons will be available in multiplayer.
- Approximately 12 multiplayer levels are in development, including the Goldeneye satellite uplink, the Golden Gate Bridge from A View To A Kill, the pyramids and Atlantis from The Spy Who Loved Me, as well as others. Call it a hunch, but I believe that Scaramanga's funhouse from The Man with the Golden Gun will at least be considered, and may end up in the final version of the game.
- Different levels are available for two player multiplayer (such as the Goldeneye satellite uplink) that are not available in four player modes. There will also be online exclusive multiplayer levels, and likely specific levels for consoles and system links.
- Players can earn 'rogue bonuses' for doing evil things such as taking hostages and killing people in 'death traps' that are set throughout the game. This will also speed up the recharging the power of your golden eye. This is similar to the 'Bond moment' system seen in Everything Or Nothing.
- Academy Award winning set designer Sir Ken Adam contributed on new set designs as well as help on using classic sets. Here is some concept art by Ken Adam for the game (click for larger image):

- Kym Barrett, the costume designer from The Matrix, contributed costume designs.
- Rene Morel, character model artist from the Final Fantasy movie, contributed models for the game.
- The game will be tweaked for each system in terms of harnessing the power of each system, such as better graphics rendering on the Xbox.
- Some missions can be played in a stealthy manner, but stealth is not required to beat them.
- Levels also integrate a zipline system, where players can slide down the wire and fire weapons at the same time to other roofs of buildings.
- Some multiplayer levels will also include A.I. controlled attackers, such as a helicopter circling the Goldeneye uplink satellite, which can be destroyed (but will respawn), or turned off.
- Pussy Galore plays the love interest of the game, as well as a pilot and a 'handler.'
- The game will include a Donald Pleasance style Blofeld.
- SPOILER: Partway through the game you begin to realize that you do not have complete control over the 'golden eye' that was given to you by Goldfinger. It turns out to be some sort of black box/tracking device with dangerous consequences.
- The design team also includes one of the lead designers from the well known Halo gaming series.

A brief (incomplete) level overview:

1. The first level is Operation Grand Slam from Goldfinger, where you are working along side James Bond (his only appearance in the single player game). In this version, however, Grand Slam succeeds, and James Bond is killed. It is later revealed that the sequence was a simulation, and you are thrown out of MI6 for miserably failing on the mission.

2. Level two takes place at Auric Enterprises in the Swiss Alps, a fortress similar to Piz Gloria from On Her Majesty's Secret Service, where you are brought into Goldfinger's 'gang,' and he provides you with your golden eye to replace your eye that was previously destroyed by Dr. No. Auric Enterprises also houses O.M.E.N., the Organic Mass Energy Neutralizer, which essentially vaporizes any targets that are composed of carbon (most everything). Dr. No is trying to steal this weapon from Goldfinger.

3. The third level takes place on the rooftops of Hong Kong, where you are supposed to snipe Dr. No and kill him. Your informant betrays you, and you are chased across the rooftops by Dr. No's men.

4. The fourth level takes place at Auric Goldfinger's Midas Casino on the Las Vegas strip, where he has moved the O.M.E.N. device. Dr. No once again tries to steal the O.M.E.N. device.

5. The fifth level takes place at Hoover Dam, where Dr. No has placed a seismic bomb, in case his attempt to steal O.M.E.N. fails. You are sent there, and you are able to destroy the bomb, taking out a large number of Dr. No's men, as well as members of the U.S. Army.

STILL TO COME IN PART 2 OF THE REPORT:
Interview movies with Executive Producer Patrick Gilmore and Senior Producer Chris Plummer, tons of screenshots, level videos, PS2 controls, 'golden eye' capabilities revealed and more!
