Some interesting factoids and rumors have emerged over the past couple of days regarding the casting of characters for Casino Royale. Along with the casting, the pivotal relationship between James Bond and Vesper Lynd has been addressed by director Martin Campbell.

Starting with Mr. Campbell's comments: In a USA Today article yesterday, Martin Campbell revealed the importance of James Bond's relationship with title Bond girl Vesper Lynd in the upcoming film. He notes that the relationship was critical in the development of the James Bond character as we know it to be today.

Campbell also stated that Royale will be a unique Bond film as of late; stating that it will be along the lines of the more plot-driven and dramatic From Russia With Love from 1963. His intentions (as well as the producers) are to closely link the storyline of the film to the 1953 Ian Fleming novel Casino Royale. As he has stated on numerous occasions previous to this, the film will not have Q as Bond's gadget supplier, or a Miss Moneypenny for Bond to flirt with.

From the USA Today article:

"We're going toward a much more realistic Bond, much more From Russia With Love than we've had in the past. [Bond] has to mount a card game in order to win the money back. Bond is sent in to make sure [Le Chiffre] doesn't win"

On the Bond/Vesper relationship and the development of 007's vices:

"She's the one who forges him into the Bond that we all know and love," Campbell says. "He certainly falls in love with her, and it does change him forever. It's a genuinely deeper relationship. The film deals much more on a personal level with Bond."

The reason the hero treats subsequent love interests as one-night stands also will be revealed.

"He talks about how it's too boring to have a relationship," Campbell says. "You meet, and it's all exciting, then it starts to fade, and you go through the uncomfortable part of having to get rid of the girl, etc. It's a very interesting observation, given his sort of misogynistic views."

The film also will feature a lot of "embryonic stuff" about why Bond prefers his martini "shaken, not stirred," and why he favors the Aston Martin sports car.

As for who has the role of Vesper, Campbell merely stated, "We were so wrapped up getting Bond, that's what we have to do now."

UPDATE:
Gulshan Grover is not the villain.
